Sokoto guber: Court set to deliver judgment on Tambuwal’s election

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 23 to deliver its judgment in a suit seeking the removal of the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, from office.

The presiding judge, Justice Gabriel Kolawole on Tuesday fixed the date for judgment after hearing parties to the suit.

The plaintiffs are two former aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress for the governorship position of Sokoto State – Umaru Dahiru, a former Senator, and Abubakar Sanyinna.

They joined the APC, Tambuwal and the Independent National Electoral Commission as the defendants.

They had filed the suit in January 2015 challenging the December 2014 APC’s governorship primaries which produced Tambuwal as the candidate of the party for the main election which later held on April 11, 2015.

The plaintiffs had in the suit, urged the court to among other prayers stop the INEC from accepting Tambuwal as the APC’s governorship candidate on the account of alleged irregularities that characterised the primaries.

Arguing the plaintiffs’ case on Tuesday, their lawyer, Mr. Roland Otaru (SAN), maintained that the primaries conducted in December 2014 violated both the constitution of the APC and the party’s guidelines for the conduct of primaries.

He maintained that the process was marred by, among other irregularities, lack of accreditation of delegates who voted in the primaries.

Otaru added, “We are saying that the governorship primaries held on December 12, 2014 did not comply with the provisions of section 27 of the Electoral Act”.
