Nigeria Air Force Graduates 1,928 Recruits

The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) on Friday, graduated a total of 1, 928 recruits of its Basic Military Training Course, with a warning to them to be patriotic and committed to their constitutional responsibilities of safe-guarding the nation. During the passing out parade held at the Ground Training Centre, NAF base Kaduna, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, told the new recruits to be prepared to pay the supreme price in defending their fatherland, especially at a time when the country is facing several security challenges. Their journey into the Nigerian Airforce began six months ago with a total of 1,996 candidates and 68 were later withdrawn for various offences. As part of the effort to prepare the young airmen and airwomen for the task ahead, and in pursuance of the service’s mission-oriented force development, the curriculum for their course was reviewed with the introduction of internal security module. The training also inculcated discipline in the trainees, pr

Obaseki Reprimands Edo Pensioners Over False Claims

The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki has cautioned pensioners in the state over what he described as slander against his administration in spite of efforts made to settle all their outstanding wages. Mr Obaseki stated this in reaction to claims made by a delegation of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, (NUP) Edo State Chapter led by Comrade Polleen Noruwa who visited the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State Capital. In a speech earlier, Noruwa alleged that Governor Obaseki had during the May Day celebration, made a pledge to clear all outstanding allowances owed the pensioners but was yet to do so. On his part, Obaseki reprimanded the retirees for the false claims, saying they were ungrateful despite his administration’s efforts to settle their entitlements. “Should we pay those who are retired and not pay those working, is it possible. If there was enough money won’t everybody be paid,” he questioned. We are even able to pay what we are paying now and I think it should

Senate Committee Warns Against Economic Sabotage At Sea Ports

The Senate Joint Committee investigating loss of revenue and financial leakages in the Nigeria Customs Service has warned against the existence of a cabal in the seaports. Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs, Senator Hope Uzodinma revealed that the said cabal is deliberately defrauding the country of trillions of Naira. He said this during an investigative hearing on financial leakages in the Nigeria Customs Service. According to Mr Uzodinma, preliminary findings by his committee showed evidence that a group of unpatriotic persons have brazenly constituted themselves into a cabal to cause economic sabotage at the nation’s sea ports. He explained that the cabal is abusing and violating the foreign exchange issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, engaging in incorrect classification and under valuing vessels coming into the country. “It is a common knowledge that the infractions are bound in daily transactions at our nation’s entry and exit points. Commercial banks otherwise cal

Police Parade Kidnap Suspect In Imo

The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old notorious kidnapper, Micheal Oguguo and killed four of his gang members at their hideout in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State. Parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters in Owerri, the Imo State capital, the state Commissioner of Police Chris Ezike said the suspect was arrested following an alert by some well-meaning citizens. Ezike said the residents notified the police about the kidnap of a woman last Saturday, after which men of the Anti-Kidnapping unit of the Imo State Police Command swung into action. He, therefore, appealed to the Imo citizens to continue to support the whistle blowing policy on crime initiated by the command to weed off criminal elements in the state.

Reps Meet With Magu Over Ikoyi Funds

The House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence, has met with the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu over the cash recovered in an apartment in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State, months ago. The committee said although there may have been silence over the huge cash haul uncovered in Osborne Towers, the matter is by no means forgotten. Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Sani Jaji, told Channels Television that the meeting was part of the investigation into the more than 43 million dollars recovered from the apartment. The EFCC, on April 12 made the discovery of the 43 million Dollars, 23 million Naira and another 27,000 Pounds. Meanwhile, the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, had claimed that the cash belonged to his state. Amidst unclear circumstances surrounding the ownership of the cash, the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos subsequently granted its final forfeiture to the Federal Government. Justice Muslim

Chelsea Sign Morata In Club-Record Deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid, two days after announcing that an agreement had been reached with the La Liga Champions for his transfer. The Spanish striker, who returned to Real Madrid last season after spending two seasons at Juventus, joins Chelsea on a five-year deal, the Premier League Champions said in a statement on Friday. “I am so happy to be here. It’s an incredible emotion to be part of this big club. I am looking to work hard, score as many goals as I can and to win as many trophies as possible,” said Morata, who will proceed to join up with the squad on its pre-season tour of Asia. The Blues expect the forward who scored 20 goals last season as Real claimed the La Liga and Champions League trophies to make a big impact and lead their attack after showing Diego Costa the door. “We are delighted to complete Alvaro’s signing and welcome him to the club. We believe he can make a great impact for Chelsea and look forward to seeing him in

Arsenal Playing Chelsea Is Never Just Another Game, Wenger Says

As Arsenal prepared to face Chelsea in a match in Beijing manager Arsene Wenger said that there is no such thing as a friendly match between the two sides. The teams will meet in the Bird’s Nest stadium as part of their pre-season preparations but the Frenchman admitted that the rivalry between the two clubs is too intense for the match to be taken lightly. Wenger said: “Well it’s obviously difficult to predict but I think like (Laurent) Koscielny said it’s a friendly between Chelsea and Arsenal, that means it’s not really a friendly. There is always some pride at stake, some London desire to have a superiority. “It was a very interesting game in the final of the FA Cup, we play against Chelsea in the Champions League and we play them very early in the season again so in fact we know each other very well, and it’s difficult to know how prepared is Chelsea, how far we are with the preparations but tomorrow will be a good indication. It was good against Bayern (Munich), it’s another te

Australia says Chinese spy ship near war games

A Chinese spy ship has been detected off the Australian coast near joint war games underway between the United States, New Zealand and Australian militaries, the Australian Defense Force (ADF) said on Saturday. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army-Navy Type 815 Dongdiao-class auxiliary general intelligence vessel was operating off the northeast coast during the Talisman Sabre war games, the ADF said in a statement. The Chinese ship remained outside Australian territorial waters but was inside the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone in the Coral Sea, it said. "The vessel’s presence has not detracted from the exercise objectives. Australia respects the rights of all states to exercise freedom of navigation in international waters in accordance with international law," the statement said. More than 30,000 troops from the United States, New Zealand and Australia are taking part in biennial war games, which end in late July. China's growing military presence, particularly in

Iraqi bridge is sole link for Mosul residents rebuilding lives

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - On a pontoon bridge connecting East and West Mosul, residents of a city shattered by the battle to expel Islamic State cross back and forth trying to rebuild their lives from the rubble. The temporary structure, known as the Victory Bridge, is the only crossing over the Tigris River in the city itself. Other bridges, including the landmark Iron Bridge, were wrecked in nine months of urban warfare which saw Iraqi government forces fight the militants street-by-street and house-by-house. With Mosul back in government hands, hundreds of people stream over each day to check homes in the devastated west side, salvage belongings or find a place to stay in the east. All have tales of hardship and suffering under three years of Islamic State rule and, despite their relief that is over, now they are worried about their present predicament and the future. Many people from West Mosul, where whole neighborhoods were flattened in air and artillery strikes by a U.S-.led coa

Egypt says 30 suspected militants killed in Sinai raids

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian security forces killed 30 suspected militants in ground and air raids in North Sinai conducted over the past four days, the military said in a statement on Friday. Egypt faces an Islamist insurgency led by the Islamic State group in the Sinai Peninsula, where hundreds of soldiers and police have been killed since 2013. The military statement said 30 "highly dangerous" militants were killed and five others arrested in the raids, though it did not name a specific militant group or release names of those killed. This month Egypt was hit by one of the worst attacks on its security forces in years when 23 soldiers were killed after two suicide car bombs were detonated in North Sinai.

Trump warns Iran over detained Americans: White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Iran would face "new and serious consequences" unless all unjustly detained American citizens were released and returned, the White House said in a statement on Friday. Trump urged Iran to return Robert Levinson, an American former law enforcement officer who disappeared more than 10 years ago in Iran, and demanded that Tehran release businessman Siamak Namazi and his father, Baquer. The statement capped a week of rhetoric against Tehran. On Tuesday, Washington slapped new economic sanctions against Iran over its ballistic missile program and said Tehran's "malign activities" in the Middle East undercut any "positive contributions" coming from the 2015 nuclear accord. Those measures signaled that the Trump administration was seeking to put more pressure on Iran while keeping in place an agreement between Tehran and six world powers to curb its nuclear program in return for lifting interna

Russia not reason for U.S. ending CIA arms to Syria rebels: general

U.S. Army General Raymond Thomas ASPEN, Colo. (Reuters) - A U.S. decision to halt a CIA program equipping and training certain rebel groups fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was not done as a concession to Assad ally Russia, a top U.S. general said on Friday. Earlier this week a U.S. official said the decision was part of an effort by the Trump administration to improve relations with Russia, which along with Iranian-supported groups has largely succeeded in preserving Assad's government in the six-year-long civil war. "It was, I think, based on an assessment on the nature of the program, what we're trying to accomplish, the viability of it going forward," U.S. Army General Raymond Thomas, head of the Special Operations Command, told the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado. The decision was "absolutely not a sop to the Russians," Thomas said. Thomas, offering the first on-the-record commentary on the matter by a U.S. official, desc

Qatar's ruler says time to resolve differences in talks

Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani DOHA (Reuters) - Qatar's emir called on Friday for dialogue to resolve a political crisis pitting his country against four Arab states, saying any talks must respect national sovereignty, but the call was unlikely to end the rift. In his first speech since four Arab countries severed ties with Doha, a defiant Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani said life was continuing as normal despite what he described as an unjust "siege". Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut ties and imposed sanctions on Qatar last month, accusing it of financing extremist groups and supporting terrorism, which the emir denied. "Qatar is fighting terrorism relentlessly and without compromise, and the international community recognises this," Sheikh Tamim said in the televised speech. He spoke hours after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the United States was satisfied with Qatar's efforts to implement an agr

Istanbul court orders four activists detained again - Reuters

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A Turkish court ordered the re-arrest on Friday of four activists who had briefly been freed after being detained along with the local director of human rights group Amnesty International, Hurriyet Daily News website reported. The activists were in a group of 10 people detained two weeks ago while attending a workshop near Istanbul. They were released on Tuesday, while the other six were remanded in custody on charges of belonging to a terrorist organization. The website said the new detention warrants were issued following an appeal against their release by the Istanbul public prosecutor's office. The 10 detainees include Amnesty's Idil Eser, and German national Peter Steudtner, whose arrest has deepened a political crisis between Ankara and Berlin. Germany said on Friday it was reviewing applications for arms projects from Turkey, accusing it of stepping up covert operations on German soil, and a minister in Berlin com

Six dead in worst Israeli-Palestinian bloodshed for years

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Six people were killed on Friday in the bloodiest spate of Israeli-Palestinian violence for years, prompted by new security Israeli measures at Jerusalem's holiest site. Three Israelis were stabbed to death in a Jewish settlement in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, hours after three Palestinians were killed in violence prompted by Israel's installation of metal detectors at entry points to the Noble Sanctuary-Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem's walled Old City. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ordered the suspension of all official contact with Israel until it removed the metal detectors. He gave no details, but current contacts are largely limited to security cooperation. "I declare the suspension of all contacts with the Israeli side on all levels until it cancels its measures at al Aqsa mosque and preserves the status quo," Abbas said in a brief televised speech. The three Israelis stabbed to death and a fourth who was wounded were fr

U.S. special envoy to visit eastern Ukraine

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The envoy tapped to lead U.S. diplomacy on the Ukraine crisis will embark on a trip to eastern Ukraine and European nations on Friday for talks with officials, conflict monitors and "those who have been affected by Russian aggression," the State Department said on Friday. Kurt Volker, the former U.S. ambassador to the NATO military alliance and the newly named U.S. special representative for Ukraine negotiations, will visit eastern Ukraine, the country's capital Kiev, and then France, Belgium, Austria and the United Kingdom in his weeklong trip. A 2015 ceasefire between Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists in the eastern part of the country is regularly violated, and Washington cites the conflict as a key obstacle to improved relations between Russia and the United States. Volker "will travel to eastern Ukraine on July 21 to meet with those who have been affected by Russian aggression and to discuss the importance of security and safety for

Borussia Dortmund rule out selling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Borussia Dortmund have informed rumoured suitors AC Milan and Chelsea that star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is no longer for sale. The 28-year-old appeared likely to be on his way out of the Westfalenstadion following links to a number of clubs, namely Milan and Chelsea who had both reportedly made contact. Dortmund had previously warned any interested sides that Aubameyang, who netted twice against former club Milan in Tuesday morning's International Champions Cup clash in China, would remain at the club if no formal offers were tabled before the end of this week. After talks between Milan and BVB chiefs in the Far East in the past 24 hours, it has now been decided that the Gabon international will not be sold this summer for any price. "We have decided that Auba will stay with BVB," sporting director Michael Zorc said. "The transfer window is closed for him." Aubameyang, also said to be high on the list of targets for Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool,

Arsenal to turn to Karim Benzema if Alexis Sanchez leaves

Arsenal have reportedly eyed up a move for Real Madrid ace Karim Benzema as a replacement for Alexis Sanchez if the wantaway forward gets his wish and leaves this summer. The Chile international's future remains uncertain with five weeks of the transfer window left to run after entering the final 12 months of his Emirates Stadium contract. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has repeatedly made it clear that he has no intention of cashing in on the 28-year-old, who boasts Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City among his rumoured suitors. Sanchez may force an exit from North London in an attempt to ply his trade in the Champions League next season, however, with both PSG and City expected to table formal bids before the market shuts for business. Spanish outlet Don Balon suggests that Benzema is Wenger's top target to replace Sanchez should that be the case, and the Frenchman is prepared to spend big to get his man. Arsenal have so far brought in one big-name player this summer, landi

Manchester United target Ivan Perisic in Inter Milan squad for Far East tour

Ivan Perisic has been included in Inter Milan's squad for their tour of China, despite ongoing links with a move to Manchester United. The Croatian winger has been on the Red Devils' radar all summer long and was reportedly the subject of a failed £39.5m bid earlier in the window. Inter have issued a hands-off warning to United in recent days, however, leaving boss Jose Mourinho to concede that he has "no idea" if the wideman will be joining. Further doubt appears to have been cast on his move to Old Trafford, meanwhile, as Inter have named the 28-year-old as part of their travelling contingent for the trip to the Far East. Inter are due to face Schalke 04, Lyon, Bayern Munich and Chelsea during their time in Asia, before rounding off their pre-season campaign with games against Villarreal and Real Betis.

Ander Herrera: Romelu Lukaku arrival "massive" for Manchester United

Ander Herrera has suggested that the arrival of Romelu Lukaku could be the missing piece in Manchester United's title-winning jigsaw. The Red Devils fell well short in the Premier League last term, forcing boss Jose Mourinho to dig deep to bring in the £75m striker from Everton. Lukaku boasts proven pedigree in the top flight after netting on a regular basis for both West Bromwich Albion and Everton, registering 25 in all last time out, and it did not take him long to get off the mark for his new side. Following the loss of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Herrera admits that United boasted too many players of the same ilk, with the 24-year-old giving them a much-needed cutting edge up top. "We have many players like Micki (Henrikh Mkhitaryan), Marcus [Rashford] and Anthony [Martial], who are very good in a one-against-one, but we need one like Romelu," he told MUTV. "He's strong and can hold the ball for us. Sometimes, when you are defending, you can keep the ball and he c

Antonio Conte signs new two-year contract at Chelsea

Chelsea have announced that manager Antonio Conte has agreed terms on a new-and-improved two-year contract at Stamford Bridge to end the speculation regarding his future. The 47-year-old guided the Blues to the Premier League title with a record number of wins in his maiden campaign at the club, while also reaching the final of the FA Cup in May. Much uncertainty has surrounded the former Juventus chief's future in recent weeks, however, as the Italian had reportedly grown frustrated after missing out on a number of his transfer targets, coupled with being homesick following time away from his family. Conte has not extended his terms in West London, as he also had two years to run on the deal penned 12 months ago, but his annual salary has been increased. After putting pen to paper, he told the club's official website: "I am very happy to have signed a new contract with Chelsea. We worked extremely hard in our first year to achieve something amazing, which I am very prou

Barcelona chief certain Neymar will not be joining Paris Saint-Germain

Barcelona vice-president Jordi Mestre has insisted that he is "200-per-cent sure" forward Neymar will not be leaving the club to join Paris Saint-Germain. Shock reports emerged in Spain on Monday evening suggesting that PSG are willing to smash the world transfer record to sign the Brazil international, potentially setting them back around £195m to activate his release clause. There had also been claims that Neymar was tempted to call it a day at Camp Nou after four successful years with the club, due to being unhappy about playing second fiddle to Lionel Messi, but Barca chief Mestre is adamant that no deal has been struck and the ex-Santos ace is staying put. "I'm 200-per-cent sure that he is going to stay," he told reporters. "I've read information in the French press that PSG themselves have categorically denied it, a club with whom we are maintaining absolutely normal relations. Nothing has changed in that aspect." Neymar has scored 105 go

Police arrest 28 suspected kidnappers, rescue 21 victims In Abia

Nigeria Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeyele Oyebade, has said that the Command, in the past 11 months, has arrested 28 suspected kidnappers and rescued  21 victims. Oyebade said 23 out the 28 suspects have been charged to court. He disclosed this in an interview with Southern City News in Umuahia, the State capital, on Tuesday, July 18. The police boss attributed the decline in the number of kidnap cases in the state to the community policing strategy of the command. He said the police have maintained a constant interaction with the residents in the state at different levels -  engaging traditional institutions, principals and proprietors of private schools, bankers, markets unions and the eminent people's forum. Oyebade said, "Whatever we are doing is to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state because we cannot compromise the fundamental human rights of Abia residents. "When we talk of the relevan

Top US general: North Korea might have the range, but lacks in accuracy

FILE 2016: Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff U.S. Air Force General Paul Selva speaks in Washington, D.C.  (Reuters) The second highest-ranking U.S. military official said on Tuesday that despite North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile’s range, Pyongyang does not have the ability to hit the U.S. with “any degree of accuracy,” Reuters reported. North Korea is believed to possess hundreds of missiles capable of striking South Korea and Japan. Its recent test of an ICBM put it one step closer to its goal of developing nuclear-armed missiles capable of reaching anywhere in the United States. “What the experts tell me is that the North Koreans have yet to demonstrate the capacity to do the guidance and control that would be required,” Gen. Paul Selva, the vice chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee. South Korea on Monday offered talks with North Korea to ease animosities along their tense border and resume reunions of fam

ICC judges to rule on release of Ivory Coast ex-leader Gbagbo

War crimes judges will rule Wednesday whether former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo can be released from prison for the rest of his trial on charges arising from deadly election violence that rocked his nation in 2010. Gbagbo, the first ex-head of state to be tried by the International Criminal Court, has appealed a March decision that he must stay behind bars in a UN detention centre until the end of the legal process. Both Gbagbo, now 72, and his former militia leader Charles Ble Goude, 45, have pleaded not guilty to four charges of crimes against humanity including murder, rape, and persecution in five months of bloodshed that wracked the Ivory Coast. About 3,000 people died in the turmoil that swept Abidjan — once one of Africa’s most cosmopolitan cities — in the aftermath of the November 2010 presidential polls that Gbagbo lost to bitter rival Alassane Ouattara. His highly divisive trial at the tribunal in The Hague opened in January 2016, and is set to last three to four year

Lai Mohammed Reacts To Criticism Over FG Move To Stop Music Production Abroad

The Minister of Information and Culture of Nigeria, Lai Mohammed, has reacted to criticisms trailing his recent pronouncement on steps being taken by the government to discourage the production of Nigerian movies and music outside the country. In a chat with PT on Sunday, he said it was to tackle the exploitation of perceived loopholes in the Nigerian Broadcasting Code, NBC. “The NBC code today as it stands has been exploited and not defined and that’s why movies being directed by Nigerians with Nigerian actors, actresses can be shot in South Africa and then brought back to be consumed in Nigeria. All we are saying is that we are going to amend the code in a manner that it will not be possible for you to exploit any loophole there to go and shoot outside Nigeria film, music or programs that are meant to be consumed in Nigeria,” Mr. Mohammed said. The Minister on Saturday said the government had taken steps to get the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, NBC to put an end to the trend of produc

Her aunt used a torch to follow a trail of blood to find the girl's body, said the state-run Chronicle. The incident occurred on Saturday night in the wildlife-rich Chiredzi district. A police spokesperson said Mitchell Mucheni had gone round the back of the house to relieve herself while her aunt, 34-year-old Mawonei Muchacha waited for her. When she didn't return, Muchacha went to investigate and saw her niece's body being dragged away by the lion. The aunt called for help from a neighbour and the two used a torch to follow the lion's spoor. "They were guided by a trail of bloodstains until they stumbled on Mitchell's lifeless body, some 300 metres from the homestead," police spokesperson Kudakwashe Dehwa told the Chronicle. There are occasional reports of fatal lion attacks on humans in remote areas of this southern African country. In 201

However, a security source told the News Agency of Nigeria that soldiers had fired an artillery at a convoy of suspected Boko Haram insurgents who were trying to attack the city which caused series of explosions.
