It's official: Older versions of Internet Explorer are now at risk

Microsoft this week made good on a 2014 promise and withheld security updates from users of older versions of the company's Internet Explorer (IE) browser. All Windows users still running IE7 or IE8, and those running IE9 on any other edition of Windows but Vista, as well as those using IE10 on anything but Windows Server 2012, did not receive the patches Microsoft distributed Tuesday to systems equipped with the newer IE11 or Edge browsers. As is its practice, Microsoft issued a single, cumulative update for IE on Feb. 9. The update, labeled MS16-009, included fixes for 13 vulnerabilities. While Microsoft did not spell out which fixes were not given to older copies of IE, it isn't difficult to pinpoint those unsent. Of the 13 vulnerabilities patched by MS16-009, nine affected every version of IE that is still supported, including IE9 on Windows Vista and IE10 on Windows Server 2012. Because different versions of Microsoft's browser share large amounts of code --

Diego Forlan: 'Paul Pogba nowhere near as valuable as Paul Scholes'

Diego Forlan has claimed that potential Manchester United signing Paul Pogba is nowhere near as valuable as Paul Scholes would have been in his prime. The Juventus midfielder is said to be on the verge of a return to Old Trafford for a world-record transfer fee in excess of £100m, after leaving the club on a free in 2012. Uruguay striker Forlan, who played alongside Scholes during his two years at United, wrote in his column for The National: "If Paul Pogba is to cost €120m, imagine how much Manchester United would have needed to pay for Paul Scholes? The midfielder was the best player that I ever played with, by a distance. "United were lucky in that Scholes had no need or desire to leave the club when he was a player. He was a local boy and a United fan, one of the few great players born near a club who are one of the biggest in the world. "Pogba's a good player, I like him. He could well go onto become the best midfielder of his generation. Is

Syrian families trickle out of Aleppo, reports say

(CNN)Dozens of families have started to trickle out of war-ravaged Aleppo, days after the Syrian army announced it encircled the city and cut off rebel supply routes, according to reports. The families moved out of eastern Aleppo on Saturday through humanitarian corridors set up by the regional government, according to the Syrian state news agency SANA. SANA also reported that several rebel gunmen surrendered. Syrian state TV showed what it said were women and children leaving the city along a street lined with bomb-damaged buildings. Let’s Talk Turkey About Turkey By Reuben Abati

I was shocked by the trenchant reaction to my piece on the July 15 attempted coup in Turkey from at least two persons. The piece titled “Nigerians and the Failed Coup in Turkey” (The Guardian, Sunday, July 17) had fetched a mail and direct messages from a concerned Nigerian who objected to my description of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a bad guy- an intolerant, arrogant, temperamental dictator who after July 15 could become even more authoritarian. The fellow praised Erdogan and spoke glowingly about how well the Turkish economy has fared under his watch. I also got a list of current economic indicators on Turkey sent to me. I assured the fellow that I was not in any way in support of any anti-democratic move, and that the article was not about the Turkish economy but Erdogan’s politics and leadership. I added that while he was perfectly entitled to his admiration of Erdogan, I had no reasons to change my views and that he should beware of Embassy propaganda. It was a

Result: Real Madrid hold off Chelsea to pick up victory in Stateside friendly

Real Madrid scored three first-half goals to earn a 3-2 victory over Chelsea in the International Champions Cup on Saturday evening. The friendly match, played in front of more than 105,000 spectators at the Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, was seemingly over as a contest by the interval thanks to an unlikely Marcelo double and Mariano Diaz's wonderstrike. Madrid failed to push on in the second half and allowed Chelsea back into the contest late on when Eden Hazard came off the bench to score what proved to be a couple of consolation goals in his first club outing of the summer. It may well have been a different story entirely had Chelsea not fluffed their only chance of the first half, which arrived just two minutes in at the end of a Willian delivery. John Terry was left unmarked a few yards out but could not make any telling contact, while Nemanja Matic failed to lift the ball over Kiko Casilla with his equally-tame attempt. Casilla would not have another stop to mak
