Tobi, the Big Brother Naija housemate who shared his Beirut experience with a Punch’s correspondent, disclosed that he experienced racism in Beirut. Bahraini Emerges Winner Of Seventh Okpekpe Race

A Bahraini, Dawit Fikadu, has emerged the winner of the 7th Okpekpe race which held in Edo State, South-South Nigeria. His winning the 10 kilometre road race has set a new course record of 28 minutes 48 seconds while Sheila Chelangat of Kenya won in the female category. Speaking to Channels Television after the race, Fikadu who is third time lucky having come 9th in 2017, 2nd last year said that the weather conditions were a bit harsh due. According to him, this is as a result of the scorching sun compared to the last edition where it rained. Similarly, Chelangat, who is participating for the time also complained about the hot weather. Speaking at the end of the game, the Sports Minister, Solomon Dalong, commended the Edo State Government for the improvements in this year’s edition. A bill for an Act to provide for the establishment of Federal University of Technology Auchi, Edo, on Wednesday passed third reading at the House of Representatives. The bill which was sponsored by Rep Johnson Oghuma (APC Edo) passed at Wednesday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the provisions of the bill, the Oghuma said the piece of legislation is aimed at upgrading Federal Polytechnic Auchi to a Federal University of Technology. Reps Adopt Bill Banning Use Of Plastic Bags, Prescribe N500,000 Fine

The House of Representatives Committee on the Environment and Habitat has approved a bill prohibiting the use, manufacture and importation of all plastic bags used for commercial and household packaging. The lawmakers on Tuesday passed the bill, Plastic Bags (Prohibition) Bill, 2018, with the hope that it will address the issue of relieving pressure on landfills and protect the environment. The bill enacted by the National Assembly, states that a retailer shall offer a paper bag to the customer at a point of sale; and failure to do so, such retailer is guilty of an offence. It also added that a manufacturer of plastic bags, for the purpose of selling, whether as a carryout bag is guilty of an offence. According to the bill, any person found guilty shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding N500, 000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years, or to both such fine and imprisonment. Justice M.T.M Aliyu of Kaduna State High Court, sitting in Kaduna has ordered a temporary forfeiture of six houses and three filling stations, believed to be proceeds of economic sabotage, forgery and theft of petroleum products to the federal government. The judge gave the order while ruling on a ex-parte motion brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC against some suspected Kaduna-based oil fraudsters. The EFCC alleged that the affected properties were proceeds of crime by some independent oil marketers and oil depot representatives, who conspired with some staffs of the PPMC/NNPC Kaduna Depot to illegally lift petroleum products. The affected oil marketers and oil depot representatives are: Abdulkadir Mohammed Salihu, Nurudeen Abdullahi Musa, Husseini Ahmed Abdulkarim, Ahmed Adamu, Yusuf Olaide Rauf, Ahmed Sa’ad Yerima, Agbo Otache and Bala Ibrahim. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal office, on Tuesday secured the conviction and sentencing of two Internet fraudsters, Temitope Samson and Uduogwu Freeborn Eboagwu, to six months imprisonment each before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State. The convicts were arraigned on an amended two-count charge bordering on possession of fraudulent documents containing false information, an offence contrary to Section 318 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State No. 11 of 2011. One of the counts reads: “That you, Temitope Samson, on or about the 14th day of March, 2019 in Lagos, within the Ikeja Judicial Division, had in your possession documents containing false pretence with the heading “Google Account Profile” , wherein you falsely represented yourself as Kaliyah Salius, which representations you knew or ought to know, having regards to the circumstances of the case, that the document contains false pretence.”

The trial of a former director in the Police Pension Office, Esai Dangabar and others over alleged N14 billion Pension Fraud, continued on Tuesday before Justice Hussen Baba Yusuf of the Federal High Court, sitting in Maitama, Abuja with a prosecution witness, a former staff of Standard Chartered Bank, Mustapha Gadanya testifying on second defendant’s asset declaration. Gadanya affirmed in his testimony that Veronica Onyegbula, who is standing trial in the alleged N14billion fraud as the second defendant, declared her assets as required by law on February 14, 2012 and didn’t own millions of naira nor properties. Lawmakers pass bill banning NaijaBet, NairaBet in Bauchi

The Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed a bill banning all forms of gambling, ownership and operations of gaming machines including NaijaBet and BetNaija, in the state. The member representing Lere/Bula constituency, Aminu Tukur, who spoke to journalists after the House sitting in Bauchi on Thursday, said, “The bill seeks to ban all forms of gambling and its operations in the state.” He said the bill, which was co-sponsored by 10 other members, should be cited as Gambling and Gaming Machines Prohibition Law of the state. Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Advance Fee Fraud Section, Abuja Headquarters in collaboration with men from the Benin Zonal Office in an operation on Friday 17, 2019 arrested 22 suspected internet fraudsters during an early morning raid at Sapele, Delta State. Working on intelligence reports, the suspects, who are between the ages of 18 to 30 years, were smoked out from their hideout in an early morning operation.  A day earlier, the operatives from Abuja had arrested two suspected internet fraudster in Ughelli, Delta State. Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has said that 25,000 classroom chairs for pupils are under construction, just as about 75 per cent of public schools in the state have commenced deployment of digital tools in teaching. The governor also said that about 9,000 teachers had been trained under the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation programme. Obaseki disclosed this recently, while inspecting Ivbiotor Primary School and Itohan Primary School in Benin City. He said, “About 75 per cent of our schools are under Edo-BEST and we have 25 per cent to go. We have ordered 25,000 seats for our pupils which is under construction at the Government Science and Technical College and others will come from the Edo Production Centre in the state. “ Our schools are now well organised and the level of participation of our pupils is high. To provide needed infrastructure to fast track the development of the Benin River project and accelerate sustainable development in the state, Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki has awarded a N6.8 billion contract for the dualisation of Ekehuan Road and construction of underground drainage system on Uwadiae Street. The contract was awarded during a recent Executive Council (EXCO) meeting held before the governor proceeded on his annual leave. The project was awarded at a cost of N6,812955739.70. On completion, it will “enhance the state government’s desire to transform Benin into a modern City and serve as a booster to the development of the Benin River Port,” a document on the contract said. The Benin River Port is one of the big-ticket projects of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration in the state aimed to drive industrialisation and boost export earnings. The Federal Government has abolished the dichotomy between holders of Barchelor’s Degree and those with Higher National Diploma, HND, in all the Services under the Ministry of Interior. The agencies affected are the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Prisons Service and Federal Fire Service. Before now, personnel with HND certificates are employed into the Inspectorate cadre while their colleagues with Barchelor’s Degree certificate are in the Superintendent cadre. However, with this new policy, the HND holders will now be moved from the Inspectorate cadre to Superintendent cadre without obtaining any degree certificates as the case was before now.
