Obafemi Martins signs N4bn Shanghai deal

Former Eagles striker Obafemi Martins has extended his contract with Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua. The former Inter Milan, Newcastle United and Wolfsburg star first penned a one-season deal with the Gregorio Manzano-led side, but will now stay with the club until the end of the 2017 season based on the new agreement. Martins has averaged 0.5 goals per game (15 goals from 30 appearances) this season, a feat that helped him to get the new improved pay cheque. A former Governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, is currently in the dock before a Federal High Court in Lagos answering alleged corruption charges. Kalu and others had been initially arraigned in 2007 before Justice Adamu Bello of the Federal High Court, Abuja (now retired). They were arraigned in an amended 34-count charge over an alleged diversion of about N3.2bn from the Abia State Government’s treasury during Kalu’s tenure as governor.

Spill: Delta Communities threaten to shut Escravos-Warri Line

A total of 35 communities affected by oil spill in Gbaramatu Kingdom in the Warri South West Council Area of Delta State, on Sunday, gave the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation a seven-day ultimatum to commence the clean-up exercise in the area or they will shut down activities at Escravos.  The communities also asked the NNPC and the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company Limited to provide relief materials and compensation for the affected area.  The letter  addressed to the NNPC Group Managing Director was signed on behalf of the communities by Johnbull Demebi, Edward Odudu and Chief Moses Bebenimibo. Iraqi special forces approach Mosul from east

BAZWAYA, Iraq –  Iraqi special forces advanced on the Islamic State-held city of Mosul from the east on Monday, taking heavy fire but inching closer to the city's limits. S’court Justices Under Probe Withdraw From Sittings

The two Justices of the Supreme Court, Sylva Ngwuta and Inyang Okoro, who were among some judiciary officers recently arrested by the Department of State Services on corruption allegations, have voluntarily withdrawn from further participating in the proceedings of the apex court. The PUNCH learnt on Sunday that the two senior judiciary officers would no longer sit until when they were able to clear their names. It was also gathered that both Ngwuta and Okoro had not been sitting since they were released after their arrest along with some other serving and compulsorily retired judges between October 7 and 8. The outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, was said to have disclosed this at a meeting, which he held with a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association in his chambers last Thursday. According to a source, who attended the meeting, the CJN ruled out the call for the suspension of the two justices of the apex court or any of the other arrested judges.

Dr Chinyere Akpanika, a Gynaecologist at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), says breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women worldwide. Akpanika said this on Saturday while delivering a lecture on “Early Detection and Prevention of Cancer’’ at the Naval Officers Mess, Calabar. The programme was organised by Mrs Omotayo Oluwole, Zonal Director, Naval Officers Wives Association, Eastern Naval Command, Calabar. Akpanika, who said Nigeria recorded over 100,000 new cases of cancer annually, added that early detection of the disease increased the chance of survival of an affected person. According to her, 85 per cent of women who have breast cancer do not have a family history of breast cancer. Yobe Commissioner for Agriculture Mustapha Gajerima says that rice farmers in the state have scaled up their production following the ban on importation of rice. Gajerima made the disclosure in Dayama village, Yobe on Saturday. He said that farmers were exploiting the advantage of the ban to scale up production and develop local content. The Algerian Football Federation says the list of players invited for the 2018 World Cup qualifier match against Nigeria will be revealed on Tuesday, November 1. Twin Explosion Leaves Nine Dead In Maiduguri

At least nine people have died and 24 others injured after two loud explosions rocked Maiduguri around 7:10am on Saturday. A blast occurred at the Bakassi camp for Internally Displaced Persons while the second went off at the NNPC station along Damboa road in Borno State, northeast Nigeria. Unconfirmed sources say two female suicide bombers detonated the explosives in a gathering of women who were going to the farm. The injured have been evacuated to hospitals for treatment. Gunmen Kill Seven People in Kaduna Village Attack

At least seven people have been killed and several others injured following an attack by suspected herdsmen at Kaninkon village in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna state. The latest attack came barely two weeks after gunmen invaded Godogodo village in the same local government, killing over 40 people and burning down houses. According to a resident of the area who spoke to Channels TV correspondent on telephone, the gunmen invaded the village on Thursday. They killed the village head and six others. The latest attack has ignited tension in neigbouring communities in the southern part of Kaduna state where several people have been killed by gunmen since July 2016. Kaduna State Police Spokesman, Aliyu Usman, has confirmed the incident. He said that more policemen have been deployed to the village and other surrounding communities in the local government.

ICT Nigeria’s Fastest Growing Sector- Communication Minister

The Minister of Communications Technology, Mr Adebayo Shittu, has identified ICT as the fastest growing sector of the Nigerian economy. He says the sector has the potentials of generating more employment and wealth creation which various stakeholders in the sector can tap into. The Minister stated this in his  keynote address at the 4th meeting of the National Council On Communications Technology in Kaduna state, north-west Nigeria. He also pointed out that the ICT sector can be re-engineered to expand the frontiers of its contribution towards facilitating Nigeria’s early exit from recessionary economies. The meeting which was themed: ‘Information and Communication Technology as the focal point of Nigeria’s economic diversification’, was a strategy towards positioning the ICT sector as the focal point of the nation’s economy. In the area of spectrum management, Mr Shittu announced that the Ministry of Communications had issued and renewed a total of 668 licenses between November 2015
