Exchange rate: CBN confused on what to do with the naira – TUC

The President of the Trade Union Congress has said that the Central Bank on Nigeria is confused and does not know the steps to take to steer to the economy out of its sorry state. Kaigama said that all sectors of the economy had collapsed with the nation’s currency losing value against the Dollar and other foreign currencies every hour. According to him the misfortune of the Naira had continued with the currency exchanging for between N480 and N492 to the dollar in the foreign change market. Kaigama’s comments were contained in an address released to coincide with the nation’s 56th independence anniversary on Friday. He lamented while the nation was politically independent, the economy had been hijacked by the International Monetary Fund and a few wealthy individuals to the detriment of the citizenry. He said, “Ours is a tale of a country that has been hijacked by the Brettonwood institutions and an insignificant few in terms of number, who now manipulate the system to their own pers

Independence—PDP blasts APC, says party responsible for the woes of Nigerians

The People’s Democratic Party on Friday carpeted the ruling All Progressives Congress, saying the party is responsible for the woes of the ordinary Nigerian. The PDP submitted that since the party came into power almost two years ago Nigerians have been facing several problems as a result of poor leadership and implementation of policies that were not people friendly. The party chairman in Niger State, Mr. Tanko Beji, who made the observations in a statement released to journalists to mark Nigeria’s 56th independence anniversary regretted that Niger state had not fared better under the rulership of the APC government of Abubakar Sani Bello. “Niger State has not fared better under the leadership of “the clueless, visionless and rudderless APC government,” Beji said in the statement. “It is sad that virtually all the social infrastructures like water, roads, health facilities etc inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party government by the APC has been allowed to rot away thereby maki

I’ll continue to blame my predecessors for Nigeria’s woes – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said despite the criticisms of many, he would continue to blame his predecessors for Nigeria’s woes. He said, passing the buck, which people have been frowning on, was important in order for Nigerians to know what went wrong with the country. Buhari spoke at an event tagged, “The Conversation: An evening with creative youths,” held inside the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The event, attended also by the President’s wife, Aisha; Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife, Dolapo; as well as governors and other top government officials, had “Creative youth as drivers of the change agenda,” as its theme. Buhari said, “I am going to bore you with what we met. I know that I am being accused in the papers of passing the buck, but passing the buck is sometimes absolutely necessary to remind people who take things for granted. “When we came in, I screamed to high heavens because I had promised a lot while seeking votes. “I asked, whe

Tinubu vs. Oyegun: The battle for 2019 begins

The recent call by a national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, that the party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, should resign has shown cracks in the party, which may set the pace for the 2019 presidential election, GBENRO ADEOYE writes For more than a decade, there has been a lion at the centre of South-West political empire whose name is Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu. But the enduring rein of the man also known as the Lion of Bourdillon appears to be facing its stiffest test yet. Tinubu rose to the position of real influence and prominence because of his hold on Lagos politics and the roles he played in breaking the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo, Ogun, Osun and Ekiti states as the leader of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria. Then his role in the merger that brought about the All Progressives Congress and the success the party recorded at the last general elections further enhanced his profile as a political godfather. Jordanians protest multi-billion dollar gas deal with Israel

Thousands of protesters staged a protest in Amman on Friday (September 30) to demonstrate against a $10 billion gas deal between Jordan and Israel. The deal will supply 1.6 trillion feet (tcf) of gas to Jordan's National Electric Power Company and marks a significant step forward in Israel's efforts to exploit its offshore gas reserves. But protesters said they didn't want a deal with Israel, saying the government had other energy alternatives. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has often played up Israel's potential as an economic partner with Sunni Arab countries in the region. In that respect, the deal with Jordan represents a breakthrough. While Israel and Jordan signed a peace deal in 1994, relations are not always good, but as economic ties deepen, Israel hopes they will become firmer. Talks on the contract began more than two years ago. The 15-year deal for the massive Leviathan natural gas field, which holds an estimated 22 tcf of gas, should help the U

Russia said to send more warplanes to Syria, diplomacy 'on life support'

People walk on the rubble of damaged buildings in the rebel held area of al-Kalaseh neighbourhood of Aleppo, Syria, September 29, 2016. REUTERS Russia is sending more warplanes to Syria to ramp up its air campaign, a Russian newspaper reported on Friday, as the United States said diplomacy to halt the violence was "on life support" but not dead yet. Fighting continued to intensify a week into a new Russian-backed Syrian government offensive to capture rebel-held eastern Aleppo and crush the last urban stronghold of a revolt against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that began in 2011. Moscow and Assad spurned a U.S.-Russian brokered ceasefire agreed to this month and launched attacks on rebel-held areas in Aleppo in potentially the most decisive battle in the Syrian civil war. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by telephone for a third straight day, with the top Russian diplomat saying Moscow was ready to consider more ways

Police release videos of officer shooting California man

Authorities on Friday released two videos of police shooting an unarmed black man dead in El Cajon, California, but the grainy footage, much of it without sound, was not likely to pacify community outrage over the incident. Police and prosecutors said an investigation was still under way into the fatal shooting on Tuesday of Ugandan-born Alfred Olango, 38, and that no decision had been made on whether to criminally charge the officers involved. "This is as difficult a situation as any law enforcement officer will ever encounter and its one we never seek," El Cajon Police Chief Jeff Davis told a news conference. "That being the case, a tragic event took place that took a life and had a major impact on our community." Video of the incident comes from two sources: A camera mounted at the drive-thru window of the Los Ponchos taco stand in El Cajon and the cell phone of a bystander. Both videos show two officers confronting Olango in the restaurant's parking lot be

China's yuan joins elite club of IMF reserve currencies

China's yuan joins the International Monetary Fund's basket of reserve currencies on Saturday in a milestone for the government's campaign for recognition as a global economic power. The yuan joins the U.S. dollar, the euro, the yen and British pound in the IMF's special drawing rights (SDR) basket, which determines currencies that countries can receive as part of IMF loans. It marks the first time a new currency has been added since the euro was launched in 1999.The IMF is adding the yuan, also known as the renminbi, or "people's money", on the same day that the Communist Party celebrates the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. "The inclusion into the SDR is a milestone in the internationalization of the renminbi, and is an affirmation of the success of China's economic development and results of the reform and opening up of the financial sector," the People's Bank of China said in a statement. U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter told a news conference following a meeting Southeast Asian defense chiefs in Hawaii that he personally found Duterte's comments "deeply troubling", though the matter wasn't discussed at the meeting.
