UN envoy: Aleppo residents at risk of extermination

Residents of Syria's Aleppo are at risk of extermination and the clock is ticking on the besieged city as winter sets in, a top UN envoy told the Security Council. Stephen O'Brien, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, made the comments on Wednesday as at least 45 more civilians, including seven children, were killed while trying to flee the government ground offensive in rebel-held east Aleppo. "Today there was another massacre, I witnessed it," said Aref al-Aref, a nurse and photographer in the city's east. "The displaced people were coming at 6:30am. There was artillery shelling while they were walking in the streets. Really it was so, so horrible." US hate incidents spike after Donald Trump elected

In the wake of Donald Trump's presidential election victory, the United States saw a "national outbreak of hate" with a spike in assaults, intimidation, and harrassments towards ethnic and racial minorities, including children, women, and the LGBT community, a US civil rights group says. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) said in a report released on Tuesday that it documented nearly 900 hate incidents within the 10 days following Trump's election on November 8, but noted it was "almost certainly a small fraction of the actual number" because of underreporting. Many of the perpetrators invoked the president-elect's name during the incidents, indicating the surge was linked or motivated by his electoral win, the report said. It also blamed Trump for running an election campaign "marked by incendiary racial statements and the stoking of white racial resentment" and "opening wounds of division" in the country. Among his most co

UN slaps North Korea with toughest-ever sanctions

The United Nations Security Council unanimously imposed its toughest-ever sanctions on North Korea, placing a cap on its key coal exports after the state's defiant nuclear tests. The new sanctions resolution on Wednesday, which was spearheaded by the United States and came after three months of tough negotiations with fellow veto-wielding council member China, passed by a 15-0 vote. The resolution demands that North Korea "abandon all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programmes" and takes aim at the state's exports of coal - its top external revenue source. Under the resolution, North Korea will be restricted from exporting beyond 7.5 million tonnes of coal in 2017, a reduction of 62 percent from 2015. Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said the resolution would strip the regime of more than $700m in hard currency, dramatically reducing the money it can spend on nuclear and ballistic weapons.    Power, speaking to reporters with her counter

The pilot of the plane that crashed in Colombia had radioed he was running out of fuel and in an emergency, according to a recording of his final communications. Monday night's disaster killed 71 people, including most of Brazil's Chapecoencse football team en route to a cup final in Colombia, and sent shock waves round the global football world. Only six on board the LAMIA Bolivia charter flight survived, including three of the Chapecoense squad en route to the biggest game in their history: the Copa Sudamericana final. "Miss, LAMIA 933 is in total failure, total electrical failure, without fuel," the Bolivian pilot Miguel Quiroga is heard telling a control tower operator at Medellin airport on the crackly audio played by Colombian media. "Fuel emergency, Miss," he added, requesting urgent permission to land. Investigators from Brazil fl

Let women drive, says Saudi prince

"Stop the debate: Time for women to drive," Prince Alwaleed bin Talal said on his official Twitter account. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal is an unusually forthright member of Saudi Arabia's extensive royal family. He holds no political posts but chairs Kingdom Holding Co that has interests including in US banking giant Citigroup and the Euro Disney theme park. He is a longtime advocate of women's rights in the conservative Islamic kingdom, which has some of the world's tightest restrictions on women and is the only country where they are not allowed to drive. "Preventing a woman from driving a car is today an iss

Southampton stun Arsenal in League Cup

Southampton dealt Arsenal a shock defeat in the English League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday as goals from Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand earned Claude Puel’s side a 2-0 win. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had been hoping to win the competition for the first time, but instead his decision to make 10 changes backfired as Southampton ended his side’s 19-game unbeaten run. Southampton, who also eliminated Arsenal from the competition two seasons ago, reached the semi-finals after losing their last six last-eight ties in the competition. Puel’s side join Liverpool, Hull City and either Manchester United or West Ham United — who were facing off in Wednesday’s other quarter-final — in the draw for the last four. Dutch midfielder Clasie’s blistering drive put Southampton ahead in the 13th minute at the Emirates Stadium. England left-back Bertrand added a second seven minutes before half-time, gathering Sofiane Boufal’s pass and rifling a shot into the bottom corner. Mohamed Elneny was the

Ibra, Martial see Man Utd through

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial scored twice as Manchester United crushed West Ham United 4-1 in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday, while Arsenal were unexpectedly humbled by Southampton. United manager Jose Mourinho served a one-game touchline ban after his dismissal for kicking a water bottle during Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw against West Ham, but his absence had no ill-effects. Ibrahimovic put United ahead in the second minute and although Ashley Fletcher equalised, Martial’s second-half brace restored the hosts’ control before the Swede added a fourth goal in added time. United, who have made their worst start to a top-flight campaign since 1989, joined Southampton, 2-0 victors at the Emirates Stadium, Liverpool and Hull City in the draw for the semi-finals. The game at Old Trafford notably saw Bastian Schweinsteiger make his first appearance of the season for United as a late substitute. The former Germany captain has only recently returned to the first-tea

“God will remove your name from Book of Life if you do MMM'' - Guy cries out

A Facebook user, Akande Thomas, shared this experience of an MMM participant who claims God rejected his tithe from MMM earnings and clearly told him Christians involved in the scheme have had their names removed from the book of life. Read post below     The Reality of MMM.     (From a participant)     When I was initially introduced to MMM, I went to God in prayer to seek for HIS approval. HE clearly told me that I cannot engage in it because those Christians involved in the scheme have had their names removed from the book of life. I was seriously troubled and at the same time afraid as I prayed passionately. As soon as I finished praying, I thought within myself ‘could this voice restraining me be of God?’. Just as I was meditating, another voice came saying; ‘It can not be of God but rather from the devil trying to tie you down in perpetual poverty for the rest of your life.’ So I quickly neglected the former voice for the latter.     I decided to try the scheme with 2

Ericsson sacks 160 Nigerian workers, takes jobs to India

Ericsson Nigeria, the local subsidiary of the global telecommunications solutions provider, has disengaged about 160 permanent and outsourced workers in its Network Operating Centre, investigations have shown. It was gathered that disengagement, which takes effect on Sunday, December 4, 2016, affected 55 full-time employees of the company. According to sources in the company, some workers were laid off in July when the offshoring (the practice of a company in one country arranging for people in another country to do work for it) of jobs to India began. Findings show that foreign workers had been recruited to replace the disengaged workers, and knowledge transfer by Nigerian engineers to the new workers was ongoing in the company’s office in India. Sources revealed that the knowledge transfer had been going on since last year when some Indians were brought into the country to study the management of telecommunications infrastructure in the country. No Danger Over Eagles' World Cup Qualification

An Abuja-based sports consultant, Dr Ben Kingsley has dismissed reports that danger looms for the Super Eagles as Supreme Court is set to rule on the leadership tussle rocking the Nigeria Football Federation between Ambassador Chris Giwa and Amaju Pinnick. Media reports had suggested that FIFA might ban Nigeria if the country's apex court rule against the Amaju Pinnick board and that this will affect the Super Eagles' qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. But speaking with journalists in Abuja, Dr Kingsley said he was not surprised with the claims making the round. "Nigerians cannot be fooled again by the Pinnick board that has started threatening us with FIFA ban. Let me remind Nigerians that it is the same board that has been going around telling people that Giwa has already lost at the Supreme Court, just to misinform sports loving Nigerians on the true state of the case at the apex court. "Why are they now panicking if truly Giwa has lost at th
