Key points of Trump’s maiden speech to Congress

US President Donald Trump marked 40 days in office on Tuesday with a confident and combative address to both houses of Congress. Here are the key points of a speech that sought to translate his campaign talking points into an agenda for government. – National renewal – Trump painted his election victory as a populist “rebellion” and an “earthquake” as voters turned out to restore American pride and grandeur. He vowed to rebuild the military, end America’s opiate epidemic, revive its lawless inner cities and bring “dying industries” back to life. – Tackling bigotry – Trump tried to dampen criticism he has been slow to respond to bigotry amid the tense national atmosphere left after a divisive campaign. He denounced a spate of threats against Jewish community centers and the vandalism of graves, as well as the apparently racist murder of an Indian migrant. – Stocks soar – Trump boasted that markets have responded to the promise of his presidency with soaring share prices, and hailed a

See the horrible-looking bladder stone doctors extracted from a man

A 63 year old man was in considerable pain until doctors extracted this bladder stone from his urinary tract. The image was posted to Figure 1, a website where doctors around the world share medical images and canvass colleagues' opinion, by Dr Oktay Ozman, a Urologist at the CerrahpaÅŸa Medical Faculty in Istanbul. Bladder stones form when when the bladder isn't fully emptied and according to a paper in the journal Obstetrics and Gynaecology, men account for 95% of all cases. While some men won't have any symptoms — their stones are discovered during an X-ray or scan for another medical condition — others will suffer pain in the bladder area, blood in the urine, cloudy urine or difficulty passing it. Bladder stones smaller than 1cm may pass out in the urine. But bigger stones such as this one, which is 4cm by 4cm, need surgery. According to Dr Ozman, the patient had come to him complaining of pain in his pelvis, slow urination and blood in his urine. Tests revealed he had

It has been claimed that Juventus could turn their focus to pairing Mattia Caldara and Daniele Rugani at the back, leaving Bonucci down the pecking order in Turin. Saudi Arabia wants oil prices to rise to $60 in 2017

Saudi Arabia wants to boost crude oil prices and get rid of a supply glut [File: Faisal Al Nasser/Reuters] Saudi Arabia wants crude oil prices to rise to around $60 a barrel this year, five sources from OPEC countries and the oil industry said. This is the level the OPEC heavyweight and its Gulf allies - the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar - believe would encourage investment in new fields but not lead to a jump in US shale output, the sources told Reuters news agency. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Russia and other producers pledged last year to cut production by about 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) from January 1. The first cut in eight years is intended to boost prices and get rid of a supply glut. Crude prices have risen by more than 14 percent since the November pact but are still only trading around $56 a barrel despite record compliance by OPEC and non-OPEC members. OPEC officials have repeatedly said the group does not target a specific oil

Amnesty: Houthi rebels recruit fighters as young as 15

UN said about 1,500 boys were verified as child soldiers in Yemen [File: Khaled Abdullah/Reuters] Yemen's Houthi rebels are recruiting fighters as young as 15, including by using religious schools to lure teenagers into their ranks without their parents' knowledge, according to a rights group. Amnesty International described the "appalling" practices in a report released on Tuesday, citing family members of four boys - aged 15 and 17 - who were recruited by the rebels. "It is appalling that Houthi forces are taking children away from their parents and their homes, stripping them of their childhood to put them in the line of fire where they could die," said Samah Hadid, deputy director at Amnesty International's Beirut regional office. "This is a shameful and outrageous violation of international law," Hadid said, calling on the rebels to halt such recruitment and release the child soldiers. Russia and China veto UN resolution on Syria sanctions

Russia and China have vetoed a UN Security Council resolution backed by Western powers that would have imposed sanctions on Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons by the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Drafted by Britain, France and the United States, the measure on Tuesday won nine votes in favour, while three countries - China, Russia and Bolivia - opposed it. Kazakhstan, Ethiopia and Egypt abstained. It was Russia's seven veto in five years to save its Syrian ally. China, also one of the five veto-wielding permanent members of the Security Council, has joined Russia in vetoing six resolutions on Syria. The resolution would have put 11 Syrians, mainly military commanders, and 10 entities linked to chemical attacks in 2014 and 2015 on a UN sanctions blacklist. Russian President Vladimir Putin had warned that imposing sanctions on Syria during the ongoing Geneva conference was "completely inappropriate" and would undermine the effort to end Syria's

Donald Trump calls for 'renewal of American spirit'

US President Donald Trump has struck an optimistic tone in his first address to Congress, declaring the "renewal of the American spirit" and pointing to the US role on the world stage. Opening his speech on Tuesday evening by condemning recent threats against Jewish community centres, vandalism of Jewish cemeteries and the deadly shooting of an Indian man in Kansas last week, Trump said he took the podium to deliver a message of "unity and strength". The Republican had received criticism for not reacting strongly enough to the acts and he had not yet commented on the apparently racially motivated murder of Srinivas Kuchibhotla. Trump then went on to the core issue of his election campaign and his presidency so far: immigration reform. He pledged again to build a "great, great wall" on the Mexican border and said that "by finally enforcing our immigration laws, we will raise wages, help the unemployed," and save billions of dollars.
