MainOne launches Lagos interconnect service

MainOne has set up an interconnect service for carriers, enterprises and internet providers, based on its data centre close to Lagos.

The new service, Open-Connect, is designed to facilitate improved interconnection, collaboration and peering within the data centre, run by MainOne subsidiary MDXi, and IXPN, the Nigerian internet exchange. “This new interconnection service for customers within our data centre will significantly improve traffic growth and localisation in Nigeria, with reduced latency, improved speed and better quality of services to end users,” said MainOne CEO Funke Opeke, who was one of GTB's 50 Women to Watch, published this month.

MainOne’s Open-Connect service takes advantage of the company’s partnership with the Nigerian Internet Exchange, which provides the exchange with an IPV4/V6 network, backed by diverse backhaul, links across Lagos and Nigeria. The MDXi data centre – at Lekki, to the east of Lagos – is directly connected to MainOne’s 1.92Tbps submarine cable. Open-Connect enables customers to bypass the public internet and connect directly to partners, cloud and software-as-a-service providers with secure, reliable and flexible direct connections.

MainOne has connections to internet exchanges in Lagos, Amsterdam, London and Ghana as well as more than 50 locations across west Africa. “This solution will enable more operators and carriers take advantage of the connections of the IXPN within MainOne’s connected data centre and enhance internet traffic originating and terminating on any network in Nigeria to remain in-country,” said Opeke. She added: “Traffic growth is a useful indicator of the health of the entire internet ecosystem, and helps to measure the development of the digital economy.”
